At The Heart of a Woman (ATHOW) is a Kenyan grassroots-led NGO committed to tackling poverty, inequality, and injustice through girls’ empowerment and women’s leadership development. Our goal is to create transformative impact by expanding opportunities for girls and young women to transition safely into secure and fulfilling adulthood.
The organization empowers vulnerable girls and young women to shape the future they envision for themselves and their communities. We achieve this by designing holistic programs that help girls attend school, learn, thrive, and become leaders and changemakers within their communities.
We provide financial and social support to help vulnerable girls succeed in primary and secondary education, as well as post-school opportunities through education support, entrepreneurship training, and employment initiatives. Our focus is on unlocking the power and agency within women to influence change in their world. We aim to address the negative effects of poverty and exclusion on women’s self- worth and entitlement, working toward the creation of empowered communities that can hold governments accountable.
We strive to build strong partnerships with communities, government, like-minded organizations, and the private sector to maximize available resources and address the challenges girls and women face. We view the world through her perspective and work to dismantle the social and financial barriers that hinder her from reaching her full potential.
